Our kids are living in a world of online interaction for which they currently have few learning context or models. It is up to us as educators to prepare them for the challenges of using new technologies. In order for us to prepare students to use technologies effectively, we first need to embrace these new technologies in our practices.
We can do so by preparing our students to read, write and edit their way through online networks by making these literacy’s part of the way teaching and learning take place in the classroom.
Not only are we required to embrace digital literacy, but also know how to use them effectively during the teaching learning process. Administration will also play an integral role into how well prepared our students will be for the digital age. This is to say that the tools needed will have to be made available for proper implementation to take place.
ReplyDeleteIt can be very frightening for teachers when they realise that their students live and enjoy functioning in a digital world with which they are unfamiliar. It seems that every day a new digital gadget or technology becomes available. While you are patting your shoulders having sent your first e-mail, the average teenager have already progressed to using face book, twitter, You-tube and the list goes on. Teachers need to be literally on their toes in order to keep up with the technology which their students are accessing and using daily. We really need to embrace digital literacy if we are to be able to communicate with our children. However, I am concern that because our children are spending so much time online, their oral communication skills will begin to deteriorate W e need to find a good balance between digital literacy and traditional literacy.
